About

The World Wetlands Survey is a partnership between civil society and wetland scientists. Everyone, anywhere, is welcome to contribute a report on a wetland they know.

The survey started in 2017, with a questionnaire open for a fixed period. We repeated this in 2020 and 2024. A group of institutions coordinate the survey and the analysis: the World Wetland Network (WWN), the Society of Wetland Scientists, Cobra Collective, the Gulbali Institute at Charles Sturt University, IUCN CEM Wetland Ecosystems Specialist Group, IUCN Water, and WWT. The data, very importantly, comes from anyone who knows a wetland.

Thank you to the three lead scientists who analyse the data. Nick Davidson, Rob McInnes, Matt Simpson and Max Finlayson produce academic outputs, and WWT produces a visual summary.

From 2025 on, the survey is accessible at any time via this website.
